Rajinikanth's Muthu becomes a hit in Japan

· Chennai

Shown in Japan as 'Muthu: The Dancing Maharaja', the 1995 Tamil film earned more there than any other Indian film, holding that record for 24 years.

Rajinikanth's 1995 Tamil film Muthu opened in Japan in 1998, titled Muthu Odoru Maharaja (Muthu: The Dancing Maharaja). No Indian film had grossed more in Japan, and it kept that distinction for 24 years. Its popularity set off a brief wave of Indian films reaching Japanese screens and won Rajinikanth a big fan base in the country.
