Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University inaugurated

Chennai saw the inauguration of a state law university named for B. R. Ambedkar, created by a 1996 Act to place every law college under a single body.

Set up in Chennai in 1997, the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University owed its existence to the Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University Act, 1996, under which every law college in the state came within its control. Its namesake was B. R. Ambedkar, the jurist who was the chief architect of India's Constitution. President K. R. Narayanan inaugurated it on 20 September 1997. In 2002 it started a School of Excellence in Law of its own.
