Anna University was established in Madras as a technical university, named after former Chief Minister C. N. Annadurai.

Anna University was established on 4 September 1978 by the government of M. G. Ramachandran. It brought together the College of Engineering, Guindy, the Madras Institute of Technology and other institutions into a unitary technical university. It is named after C. N. Annadurai, the founder of the DMK and former Chief Minister. The university later became the affiliating body for engineering colleges across Tamil Nadu and a major centre of technical education in the state.
