Facing an arrest warrant, the poet and journalist Subramania Bharati moved to French-ruled Pondicherry, where he lived for about ten years.

Subramania Bharati, a poet and journalist who had worked on Swadesamitran and edited the Tamil weekly India from 1907, wrote patriotic songs and articles supporting the national movement. In 1908 the British government issued a warrant for his arrest, and he moved to French-controlled Pondicherry. He lived there in exile for about ten years, until 1918, continuing to write poetry and prose. His work is central to modern Tamil literature and nationalist culture.
