The Sri Lankan army defeated the LTTE, ending a 26-year war that had deeply affected Tamil Nadu's politics.

In May 2009 the Sri Lankan armed forces defeated the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in the north-east of the island, and LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran was killed. Large numbers of Tamil civilians died in the final months of fighting. In Tamil Nadu the war's last phase caused protests, hunger strikes and self-immolations, and became a political issue in the 2009 Lok Sabha election. Questions of accountability for civilian deaths and the welfare of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees in the state remained live issues.
