Kanchipuram silk registered as a geographical indication

Kanchipuram silk saris were one of the earliest Tamil Nadu products to gain registration as a geographical indication.
Families in Kanchipuram and its surrounding villages weave the Kanchipuram, or Kanjeevaram, silk sari, making the border and the body separately before interlocking them. The Government of India granted it geographical indication status in the mid-2000s, when the GI registry was still new. Under the tag, only saris woven in the area may carry the name. Some 5,000 families were estimated to be working in sari production as of 2008.
