The old Chingleput district was divided into Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts in 1997.

The district around Madras, known as Chingleput or Chengalpattu district, was split in 1997 into Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts. Kanchipuram, the silk and temple town, became the headquarters of the southern district, and Tiruvallur of the northern one. Both districts took in fast-growing suburbs of Chennai and its industrial belts. In 2019 Chengalpattu district was again carved out of Kanchipuram.
