Tiruchirappalli was made a municipal corporation by merging the Srirangam and Golden Rock municipalities.

Proposals to upgrade Tiruchi to a corporation had been made since the colonial period. In 1994 Tiruchirappalli was designated a municipal corporation through the merger of the Srirangam and Golden Rock municipalities with the town. Salem and Tirunelveli were also made corporations that year. The corporation runs the city's water supply and civic services.
