Expelled from the DMK, Vaiko founded the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK).

Vaiko, a DMK Rajya Sabha member and noted orator, was expelled from the DMK in 1993 amid a leadership conflict that his supporters linked to the rise of M. K. Stalin. In 1994 he founded the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, taking a section of DMK cadres with him. The MDMK became known for its strong support of the Sri Lankan Tamil cause. It later allied at different times with both the AIADMK and the DMK.
