After demanding that DMK ministers declare their assets, M. G. Ramachandran was expelled and launched the Anna DMK.

M. G. Ramachandran, then DMK treasurer, publicly alleged growing corruption in the party after Annadurai's death and demanded that ministers declare their assets. He was expelled from the DMK on 10 October 1972. On 17 October 1972 he became leader of a new party, the Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, later renamed the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). The split created the DMK-AIADMK rivalry that has dominated Tamil Nadu politics since.
