Construction Workers Welfare Board established
· Chennai
Using its 1982 Manual Workers Act, Tamil Nadu created a construction workers' welfare board financed by a cess on building activity.
Tamil Nadu passed the Manual Workers (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Work) Act in 1982, a wide-ranging law for workers in the unorganised sector under which welfare boards and schemes could be formed. Using it, the government constituted the Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Board in 1994 and notified the Manual Workers (Construction Workers) Welfare Scheme. Workers in 53 categories, ranging from masons to brick workers, may enrol with the board and claim benefits under the scheme. Its money comes chiefly from a cess levied on construction work. In later years further boards were added for other unorganised workers.
