Tiruvarur district was formed out of Nagapattinam district, with Valangaiman taluk added from Thanjavur.

Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam had been part of the composite Thanjavur district until 1991. In January 1997 the present Tiruvarur district was formed by bifurcating Nagapattinam district and adding Valangaiman taluk of Thanjavur district. Tiruvarur town, known for the Thyagaraja temple and its large temple car, became the headquarters. The district lies in the heart of the Cauvery delta rice belt.
