Namakkal district begins functioning

Split from Salem district in July 1996, Namakkal district began operating on its own from 1 January 1997.

On 25 July 1996 the government issued orders dividing Salem district and naming Namakkal town headquarters of the new unit. From 1 January 1997 Namakkal district functioned independently. Its economy is noted for poultry and eggs as well as for lorries and road transport, and Namakkal town is at times known as the 'Egg City'.
