A government order of 7 July 1996 split Madurai district to form Theni district.

Theni district was formed by splitting the former Madurai district under a Revenue Department government order dated 7 July 1996. As part of the change a new Uthamapalayam revenue division and the Theni and Bodinayakanur taluks were created on 1 January 1997. The district lies in the Cumbum valley at the foot of the Western Ghats and receives water from the Mullaperiyar and Vaigai systems. It is known for cardamom, grapes and other plantation crops.
