A freshwater lake in Ariyalur district that attracts thousands of migratory birds was declared a bird sanctuary by the Tamil Nadu government.

Karaivetti is a freshwater lake of about 4.5 square km in Ariyalur district, about 25 km from Thanjavur, fed by canals. It attracts thousands of birds each year, including the bar-headed goose, northern pintail, white stork and garganey. The Government of Tamil Nadu declared the lake a bird sanctuary in 1999, and an interpretation centre was opened in 2015. In 2024 it was designated a Ramsar site.
