Following years of delay and protest, the first VVER-1000 reactor at Kudankulam was synchronised with the power grid.

Work on the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, a project undertaken with Russian help, started on 31 March 2002, but resistance from fishermen and other local people held it up for years. Unit 1 reached criticality on 13 July 2013, and on 22 October 2013 it was linked to the grid. Commercial operation followed on 31 December 2014, and Unit 2 came later. Once both units were running, Kudankulam ranked as the biggest nuclear power complex in India.
