First unit of Madras Atomic Power Station reaches full power

At Kalpakkam, MAPS-1, the first nuclear power reactor India built largely on its own, reached full-power operation.
Located at Kalpakkam close to Chennai, the Madras Atomic Power Station uses pressurised heavy water reactors whose design and equipment came mostly from India. Unit one went critical in 1983, and full-power running started on 27 January 1984. Its sister unit followed, reaching criticality in 1985 and full power in 1986. With the station, Kalpakkam became one of the key sites of India's nuclear energy effort.
