Parandur airport project dropped

· Parandur

Chief Minister Vijay announced in the Assembly that the proposed second Chennai airport at Parandur would be scrapped and a new site sought.

The previous DMK government had proposed a greenfield second airport for Chennai at Parandur in Kancheepuram district, which faced prolonged protests from villagers over the loss of farmland, water bodies and homes. In June 2026 the new TVK government indicated that it would not proceed with the project. On 24 August 2026 Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay formally announced in the Assembly that the Parandur project would be scrapped because of concerns about displacement of farmers and residents. He said an alternative location would be identified for Chennai's second airport.
