Madras College for Women (Queen Mary's College) founded

In 1914 Dorothy de la Hey opened the Madras College for Women on the Marina, the first women's college in the city, which took the name Queen Mary's in 1917.
Dorothy de la Hey established the Madras College for Women in 1914, backed by the Governor, Lord Pentland. Its first home was Capper House, which overlooked the Marina and had earlier been a residence and a hotel. As the city's first college for women, it was given the name Queen Mary's College in 1917. South India's first three child widows to earn degrees were students there. The college grew under de la Hey's leadership, introducing science by 1923 and, in 1928, the country's first intermediate course in Indian music.
