Chief Minister Karunanidhi announced that verses of Manonmaniam Sundaram Pillai's invocation to Tamil Mother would open state government functions.

On 11 March 1970, at the request of the Karanthai Tamil Sangam, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi announced that verses of the invocation to Tamil Mother would be recited at the start of state government functions. The verses come from the prelude to the 1891 play Manonmaniam by Manonmaniam Sundaram Pillai. The official order followed on 23 November 1970, and a rendition was set to music by M. S. Viswanathan. The song was formally declared the state song in 2021.
