The Saidapet agricultural school moved to Coimbatore in 1906, and the Agricultural College and Research Institute opened there in 1909.

An agricultural school was started at Saidapet in Madras in 1868. In 1906 it was shifted to Coimbatore, where the foundation stone of the Madras Agricultural College was laid. Students were admitted to a Licentiate in Agriculture course from 1908. Governor Sir Arthur Lawley opened the Agricultural College and Research Institute in 1909, and it was affiliated to the University of Madras in 1920. The institution later became Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.
