Lakshmi Mills founded in Coimbatore
G. Kuppuswamy Naidu founded Lakshmi Mills, one of the earliest composite textile mills of Coimbatore.
Lakshmi Mills was incorporated in 1910 as a composite mill producing cotton yarn and cloth on Avinashi Road, Coimbatore. Robert Stanes had set up the first textile mills in the town in the late nineteenth century, and the industry expanded rapidly in the 1920s and 1930s. The Lakshmi group later moved into textile machinery through companies such as Lakshmi Machine Works. The growth of such mills earned Coimbatore the name 'Manchester of South India'.
