Ramanathapuram (Ramnad) district was created by combining parts of Madurai and Tirunelveli districts.

In 1910 the British formed Ramanathapuram district by clubbing portions of Madurai and Tirunelveli districts. It included the Ramnad and Sivaganga zamindaris and the island of Rameswaram. The large district was divided in 1985 into Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and Virudhunagar districts.
