As the Congress candidate, Muthuramalinga Thevar beat the Raja of Ramnad in Ramanathapuram in the 1937 election.

In the run-up to the 1937 Madras Presidency election, Muthuramalinga Thevar rallied Mukkulathor youths to campaign for the Congress, prompting the Justice Party government to curb his movements and speeches. Standing for the Congress in Ramanathapuram in February 1937, he faced the Raja of Ramnad. The result gave Thevar 11,942 votes against 6,057 for the Raja. Thevar expected the incoming Congress ministry to repeal the Criminal Tribes Act, but this did not happen.
