Separate reservation for Backward Class Muslims and Christians

Under a 2007 Act, Backward Class Muslims and Christians received their own portion of the backward class quota.

The DMK government passed the Tamil Nadu Backward Class Christians and Backward Class Muslims (Reservation of Seats in Educational Institutions and of Appointments or Posts in the Services under the State) Act in 2007. Within the reservation for backward classes, it set apart a distinct subdivision for backward Christians and Muslims. Both state government posts and admissions, private educational institutions among them, fell under the law. A special internal quota for Arunthathiyars inside the Scheduled Caste reservation came next, in 2009.
