Welfare board and department for persons with disabilities

· Chennai

In 2007 Tamil Nadu enacted a Welfare Board for Disabled Persons Act, and in 2009 it formed a separate Department for the Welfare of the Differently Abled.

A statutory board for persons with disabilities was established by Tamil Nadu's Welfare Board for the Disabled Persons Act, 2007. Two years later, in 2009, the state set up its own Department for the Welfare of the Differently Abled, while at the national level the subject still sat inside the Ministry of Social Justice. M. Karunanidhi, who was then Chief Minister and used a wheelchair, directed that ramps and lifts be provided in government buildings, both existing and new. His government also set aside 3 percent of government jobs for people with physical disabilities.
