The Union government's Centre of Excellence for Classical Tamil moved from Mysore to Chennai and became the Central Institute of Classical Tamil.

After Tamil was declared a classical language in 2004, a Centre of Excellence for Classical Tamil was set up at the Central Institute of Indian Languages in Mysore. The institute promotes research on classical Tamil and has sponsored translations of the Tirukkural into many languages.
