Christian Medical College Vellore begins MBBS course
· Vellore

Ida Scudder's medical school at Vellore became a university-affiliated medical college and began offering the MBBS degree.
Ida Scudder had started a nursing programme at Vellore in 1909 and a medical school for women in 1918. After the government ruled in 1938 that medical degrees could only be granted by universities, she upgraded the school into the Christian Medical College. Affiliated with the University of Madras, it began offering the MBBS course in 1942. A College of Nursing, described as India's first, followed in 1946.
