Madras Christian College at Tambaram hosted the International Missionary Council's world conference, a landmark in the ecumenical movement.

In 1938 Madras Christian College hosted the Tambaram Conference, also called the Madras Conference, of the International Missionary Council. It was the third world missionary conference after Edinburgh in 1910 and Jerusalem in 1928. Bishop Stephen Neill described it as the most international gathering in the history of the Christian Church up to that time. The conference is associated with the movement that created the World Council of Churches.
