The Union government set up the Madras Export Processing Zone on GST Road at Tambaram to attract foreign investment and boost exports.
The Madras Export Processing Zone (MEPZ) was established in 1984 by the Union Ministry of Commerce as one of seven export processing zones in India. Located on GST Road in Tambaram, south of the city airport, it aimed to promote foreign direct investment, earn foreign exchange and create employment. Units in the zone produced garments, engineering goods and later software. It was converted into a special economic zone on 1 January 2003.
