Mahabalipuram monuments declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Pallava-era Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram became Tamil Nadu's first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram, built largely under the Pallava dynasty in the 7th and 8th centuries, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. The site includes the Shore Temple, the Pancha Rathas, the Descent of the Ganges (Arjuna's Penance) rock relief and several cave temples. After independence the Tamil Nadu government had developed the town as an archaeological, tourism and pilgrimage site. Excavations since 1990 have yielded further discoveries.
