The Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur, built by the Chola king Rajaraja I in the early 11th century, was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. It is one of the largest temples in India and a major example of Dravidian architecture. In 2004 the listing was extended as the 'Great Living Chola Temples' to include the temples at Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Darasuram. It became Tamil Nadu's second World Heritage Site after Mahabalipuram.
