Millennium celebrations of the Thanjavur Big Temple

Thanjavur marked 1,000 years of the Brihadisvara Temple with cultural events, including a performance by 1,000 Bharatanatyam dancers.
The Brihadisvara Temple, built by the Chola emperor Rajaraja I, was completed in 1010 CE and turned 1,000 years old in September 2010. The state government and the town held cultural events to mark the occasion. Under dancer Padma Subrahmanyam, 1,000 dancers from India and abroad performed together to verses of the Thiruvisaippa. For two days from 26 September 2010 the town became a cultural hub, and commemorative stamps and coins were issued.
