After a century in the city centre, Madras Christian College moved to a large new campus at Tambaram.

Madras Christian College, founded in 1837, had been located in the heart of Madras for about a hundred years. In 1937 it moved to a large campus at Tambaram on the outskirts of the city. On 30 January 1937 the Governor of Madras, Lord Erskine, opened the first campus buildings. The college introduced a system of residential halls on the new campus.
