Reginald Heber, Bishop of Calcutta and hymn-writer, died suddenly at Trichinopoly during a tour of South India.

Reginald Heber, the Anglican Bishop of Calcutta, toured South India in early 1826, visiting Madras, Pondicherry and Tanjore. On 1 April he reached Trichinopoly, where he held a confirmation the next day. On 3 April 1826, after an early-morning service, he died while taking a cold bath. He was buried in St John's Church, Trichinopoly, and a school there founded by Christian Friedrich Schwarz became the Heber Memorial School. A sculpture by Francis Chantrey was erected in his memory in St George's Church, Madras.
