St. Stephen's Church at Ootacamund, whose foundation stone Governor Stephen Lushington laid, opened for worship in 1831.

On 23 April 1829 Governor Stephen Rumbold Lushington laid the foundation stone of St. Stephen's Church in Ootacamund. Captain John James Underwood of the Madras Engineers prepared the design. Its timber, the main beam among it, came from the Lal Bagh Palace at Srirangapatna. The first divine service was held on Easter Sunday, 3 April 1831, and the building counts among the oldest churches in the Nilgiris.
