Sir Thomas Munro, Governor of Madras and architect of the ryotwari system, died of cholera at Pattikonda while on tour.

Thomas Munro served as Governor of Madras from 1820 and is regarded as the father of the ryotwari land revenue system. In July 1827 he was touring the Ceded Districts when cholera broke out in his camp. He died of cholera at Pattikonda on 6 July 1827. The Madras government issued a Gazette Extraordinary on 9 July, and a public meeting in Madras proposed a statue by public subscription. He was buried in St. Mary's Church, Fort St. George.
