Thomas Munro served as Governor of Madras, establishing revenue and administrative systems that lasted into the twentieth century.

Thomas Munro, a Madras Army officer with long experience of revenue work in the Baramahal and the Ceded Districts, was appointed Governor of Madras in 1820. As Governor he extended the ryotwari system of land revenue and shaped systems of assessment and district administration that substantially persisted into the twentieth century. He favoured employing Indians in the administration and called for surveys of indigenous education in the presidency. He died of cholera on 6 July 1827 while touring the Ceded Districts.
