By 1827 Ootacamund in the Nilgiris had been established as a sanatorium of the Madras Presidency.

After John Sullivan reported on the Nilgiris in 1819, a road was built from Sirumugai and the Ooty Lake was created in 1824. By 1827 Ootacamund was established as a sanatorium of the Madras Presidency. Governor Stephen Lushington encouraged its further development. The town later became the summer capital of the Presidency and one of the best known hill stations in India.
