William Graham McIvor of Kew laid out the Government Botanical Garden at Ootacamund.

The Government Botanical Garden at Udhagamandalam was established in 1848. Its designer was William Graham McIvor, sent from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, who arrived in March 1848 and converted forest and swamp into a terraced garden. The garden supported the introduction of plants such as cinchona and exotic trees in the Nilgiris. It remains one of the best-known gardens in Tamil Nadu and the venue of the annual Ooty flower show.
