St. George's Church on the Choultry Plain was opened in 1815 and later became the cathedral of the Diocese of Madras.

St. George's Church was built in 1815 to serve the growing Anglican population of Madras beyond Fort St. George. It was designed by Colonel James Lillyman Caldwell and completed by Captain De Havilland of the Madras Engineers. Thomas Fanshaw Middleton, the first Bishop of Calcutta, consecrated it on 6 January 1816. It became the cathedral of Madras in 1835 when the new diocese was created. In 1947 the Church of South India was inaugurated there.
