San Thome Cathedral rebuilt and consecrated
· Santhome

The church over the traditional tomb of St Thomas at Santhome, Madras, was rebuilt in neo-Gothic style and consecrated on 1 April 1896.
The church at Santhome was first built by the Portuguese in 1523 over what is believed to be the tomb of the apostle Thomas. In 1896 it was rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style favoured by British architects of the period. It was consecrated on 1 April 1896 by Bishop Reed da Silva, assisted by the Bishop of Dhaka, Peter Joseph Hurth. The church was later raised to a basilica and declared a national shrine in 2004.
