Victoria Technical Institute opens in Madras

· Egmore

Marking Queen Victoria's golden jubilee, the Victoria Technical Institute opened on Pantheon Road in Egmore.

In 1889 the Victoria Technical Institute began functioning on Pantheon Road, Egmore, in Madras. Its founders intended it as a memorial to Queen Victoria's golden jubilee. The Prince of Wales laid the foundation stone of the institute's building in 1905. Built of pink sandstone in the Indo-Saracenic style, the structure took Akbar's palace at Fatehpur Sikri as its model.
