Connemara Public Library opens

The Connemara Public Library, founded in 1890 by Governor Lord Connemara, opened to the public in Madras in 1896.
The library had been part of the Madras Museum until Governor Lord Connemara laid the foundation stone of a separate free public library on 22 March 1890. It opened to the public in 1896 in the museum complex at Egmore and was named after him. It later became one of India's four national depository libraries, receiving copies of books published in the country. Its building is noted for its Indo-Saracenic architecture.
