St. Joseph's College, a Jesuit institution established at Nagapattinam in 1844, relocated to Tiruchirappalli.

French Jesuits set up St. Joseph's College at Nagapattinam in 1844, and the University of Madras granted it affiliation in 1866. The college shifted to Tiruchirappalli in the early 1880s; the text of its Wikipedia article gives 18 January 1881, while the timeline in the same article gives 1883. It developed into one of the largest and oldest colleges of the Madras Presidency. Its affiliation later passed to Bharathidasan University.
