American missionaries raised their Madurai mission school to a collegiate department in 1881, creating the American College.

The American Mission in Madurai had run a school since 1841. In 1881 it became a collegiate department, starting as Pasumalai College, and developed into the American College. It was one of the earliest institutions of higher education in the southern districts of the Madras Presidency. The college is now affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University.
