In 1874 the Great Southern of India Railway merged with the Carnatic Railway to create the South Indian Railway Company, later based at Trichinopoly.

Founded in 1853, the Great Southern of India Railway Company combined with the Carnatic Railway Company in 1874, and the result was the South Indian Railway Company. Much of the railway system across the southern districts of the Madras Presidency was built and run by it, connecting places such as Tanjore, Trichinopoly, Madurai and Tinnevelly. When it was registered afresh in London in 1890, Trichinopoly became its headquarters. In 1951 the company was absorbed into the Southern Railway, ending its operations.
