The Madras Railway completed its line to Beypore, linking Madras by rail with the west coast; a branch to Bangalore followed in 1864.

In 1862 the Madras Railway completed a line from Madras to Beypore on the Malabar coast, which served as its western terminus. This gave the Madras Presidency its first rail connection across the peninsula. In 1864 the company linked Jolarpettai, a station on the Madras to Beypore line, with Bangalore Cantonment. The western terminus was moved to Kozhikode in 1888.
