Founded in 1869, the Carnatic Railway Company combined with the Great Southern of India Railway in 1874 to create the South Indian Railway.

The first lines in the southern Tamil districts were laid by the Great Southern of India Railway Company, which had been set up in England in 1853. In 1869 another firm, the Carnatic Railway Company, came into existence. Five years later, in 1874, the pair amalgamated as the South Indian Railway Company. With its headquarters eventually at Trichinopoly, the South Indian Railway constructed a large part of the Tamil region's railway network.
