Presidency College, Madras moved into its new building opposite Marina Beach, on today's Kamaraj Salai.

Presidency College grew out of a preparatory school opened in Egmore in 1840. A new building for the college was constructed in 1864 to 1865. In 1870 the college moved to this location on what is now Kamaraj Salai, opposite Marina Beach. The building, with its clock tower, became one of the landmarks of the Marina front, and the college still occupies the site.
